Welcome to Friends of the Raleigh Greenway

The Friends of the Raleigh Greenway (FRoG) is a volunteer-led group promoting greenway accessibility, recreation, and environmental stewardship in Raleigh’s Capital Area Greenway system. We are a community of volunteers, outdoor enthusiasts, and advocates united by a shared love for Raleigh’s greatest natural asset—our Capital Area Greenway system.

Our mission is to inspire discovery, promote exploration, and celebrate the Greenway as Raleigh’s largest and most accessible public park. We work to:

  • Encourage greenway use for recreation, transportation, and connectivity

  • Enhance accessibility and inclusivity for all users

  • Enrich the trail experience through the thoughtful placement of art, native plantings, and the removal of invasive species

  • Collaborate with the City of Raleigh and like-minded partners to ensure a safe, vibrant, and engaging greenway for everyone

Whether you're biking, walking, birdwatching, or enjoying time with friends and family, there’s always something new to discover along the greenway.

Why our Greenways Matter

Raleigh’s greenway system began in the 1970s as a visionary response to flooding and rapid urban growth. Landscape architect William Flournoy proposed a connected network of trails through natural floodplains to support recreation, conservation, and stormwater management. Adopted in 1974, the Capital Area Greenway has grown into one of the nation’s leading urban trail systems—spanning over 120 miles and connecting parks, neighborhoods, and regional trail networks.
