This week, we continue our journey eastward along the Crabtree Creek Greenway as we explore more hidden gems and frog hideouts around Raleigh. Let’s get hoppin’!
Flora is chilling near Kiwanis Park, right along the Crabtree Creek Greenway. Look for her close to the bridge crossing the creek. Kiwanis Park is a wonderful place to stop and explore—with a Community Center, playground, and dog park just a short walk off the trail. But remember, Flora is hanging out right on the Greenway, not inside the park!
Meet Fred, our hefty and heroic hopper! He’s not your typical frog, but he’s key to our lineup. He’s made it safely across Atlantic Avenue—but don’t worry, you won’t need to cross traffic. Just follow the Greenway as it dips under the road and keep your eyes peeled. Fred’s found some nice wet ground on the other side!
Fritz is heading toward frog paradise—the swamp! He’s almost there, lounging near the boardwalk that winds through the wetlands. This is a fantastic spot to see herons, turtles, and (of course) frogs. The boardwalk can be a bit rickety, so if you notice a loose board or other issues, give a shout via SeeClickFix.com to help keep the trail safe for everyone.
Whew! Fran has braved the crossing over Raleigh Boulevard—a feat for frogs and folks alike! You’ll need to walk along the bridge over the creek and then cross Raleigh Blvd to reach one of the prettiest stretches of the Crabtree Creek Greenway. Keep going east, and between Mile Marker 5.5 and 5, you’ll spot Fran on the creek side of the path.
While you’re there, take a detour to check out Lockwood Park, a sweet little playground just off the Greenway. And if you’re feeling adventurous, keep going all the way to Anderson Point, where Crabtree Creek meets the Neuse River!
We love this stretch, but it could use a little TLC. The City has already studied improvement options—some are long-term, but others could happen sooner.
